Chorus:

Don’t try to tell me just who I am when you don’t know yourself

Spend all your time running out on the street with your mind home on the shelf

Looking at me with your eyes full of fire like you’d rather be seeing me dead

Lyin’ on the floor with a hole in my face and a ten-gauge shotgun at my head

As always I drew my images from life. The first verse harkened back to an incident years before in San Jose. A guy I knew was driving an old Volkswagen while sucking on the hose of a tank of nitrous oxide in the passenger seat. He flipped the car while turning into an off-ramp, never dropping the hose. He woke up on his back in a field, reasonably safe, with a burned VW about fifty feet away. As for the ten-gauge shotgun, someone gave me one for Christmas and it was a very impressive single-barrel item. I used to think that some day Margareta would just wind up shooting me. I had already been to the emergency room twice to get stitches on my face and head where she had struck me with various household items. At least I got more than one song out of my experiences with my wife.

Hanging out at the Chelsea Hotel in New York, we had gotten to know the actor Rip Torn; Rip is the pirate on the packaging for Long John Silver. There is not a lot of cohesiveness with this project. “Eat Starch Mom” is a jam thing that I came up with and Grace put words to. The music that Jack came up with for Long John Silver evolved the same way. With the completion of this album, it was almost over for me.
